It’s fitting that aloha means hello and goodbye as The Bachelorette’s Jillian Harris arrived in Maui to send one of her suitors away with what Jillian called a “heart-wrenching goodbye.”
Leap of Faith: After some seaside soul-searching and sand writing, Jillian drove Kiptyn to a ropes course to test trust issues. She was made him go first and only completed it herself after he promised kisses every step of the way. Although he moved like “baby giraffe learning to use his legs,” he motivated her when it came time to take the leap of faith. Later, Kip met her for dinner and dialogue about his defects. He admitted he has had “one foot in and one out in relationships.” She allowed him to stay in the fantasy suite anyway. After some heavy petting, Kip slid the shutters closed.
Failure to Communicate: After a round of beach ball, Reid spotted a helicopter coming for him and Jillian. “Being up above Hawaii with Jillian was like being in heaven,” he said before going white when the pilot said he performed aerial weddings. While there was significant smooching and joking, Jillian was determined to get to the bottom of Reid’s feelings and fired questions about proposals, relocating and love at the “cuddly, warm guy [she] relates to the most.” He fumbled. At one point, he likened his communication skills to those of a 4-year-old and relied on a show of hands to describe how much he liked her. “It’s hard to throw out the L word,” he said. Of course, it didn’t stop her from inviting him to spend the night soak in the tub.
Wind In His Sail?: Ed and Jillian spent the day on a catamaran, kissing, swimming and chatting. Because he felt disadvantaged by his lack of a hometown visit, he’d flown in his parents, a strategically awesome move. “It’s an indication that he listens to what is important to me,” Jillian said. Mom was jolly but dad questioned the show’s validity until he was moved to tears when Ed declared that he’d get engaged if she chose him. With introductions done, it was time for “sexy time” in the suite. Ed buttered her up with smooth talk and essential oils, but couldn’t seal the deal. After the typical cutaway shot from the bed to the beach, the light flipped back on, Ed was face down in a pillow and Jillian was consoling him. “’I was very nervous, and, uh, it just didn’t happen,” he said. “I couldn’t show her that I truly am in love with her.”
Island Getaway: After debating the bachelors with host Chris and watching their videos, she headed to the rose ceremony and admitted she was falling in love with all three. She pulled Ed aside to ask if their botched night in the fantasy suite was due to a lack of attraction. He swore she had nothing to worry about, which was enough to get him a rose but only after Kip won one. Maybe it was her incredibly long pause, but an eliminated Reid challenged, “I hope you made the right move. I don’t know if you’re completely sure.” After silent brooding on the bench, some tears and the “we’re in different places” speech, Reid blamed himself in the limo. “I should have opened up sooner. I don’t think she knows … I was falling in love. I screwed myself.”
