The fourth annual GalapaZooza fundraiser for the Erie Zoo was another success. A sellout crowd of more than 1,300 guests enjoyed the wildest event of the summer at the zoo.
The evening featured the bands UMOJA African Arts Company, Acoustic Gypsies, Small Town Rollers and Eugene Ross & Company. There was also a silent auction featuring art, as well as animal encounters, spa packages, jewelry and more.
Lynn McBrier was the highest bidder on the Evan Everhart metal sculpture of bamboo, and Harvey and Mary Jean Barber were pleased to win a tiger-print bench custom-made by Greg Yahn of Advanced Finishing. Mary Lincoln won a watercolor painting by local artist Abigail Adams Greenway. Â
Highlights of the evening, perhaps, were the unique animal encounters that allowed guests to feed the giraffes and see the polar bears and tigers behind the scenes. Animal keeper Steph Benson was accompanied with a Dumerils ground boa as she greeted guests to GalapaZooza.
At several grazing stations, guests sampled appetizers and desserts from 19 restaurants, including Art's Bakery, Boston Pizza, The Brewerie, Buffalo Wild Wings, Capers Restaurant and Catering, Jerilu Produce, Joe Roots Grill, La Bon Vie Steakhouse, McCormick Coffee, O'Charley's, Panera Bread, Plymouth Tavern, Pufferbelly, Sam's Club, Summer House Café, Theodore's Restaurant, Victor's at the Bel-Aire Bel-Aire Clarion Hotel and Conference Center and Wegmans.
The food, music and support for the zoo was a hit and we look forward to seeing everyone next year. Mark your calendars for June 19, 2010.
Panorama to continue
The Summer Festival of the Arts' Panorama juried art exhibit, on display at Blasco Library, 160 E. Front St., off the Bayfront Parkway, will continue during regular library hours for the next 10 days. For those who might have missed it during the festival, there are 99 pieces of art located on the second floor of the library. The work represents 64 different artists. Pittsburgh artist and educator Angelo Ciotti judged the entries.

The numbers are inAccording to Christine Eddy, director of communications and the annual fund, Cathedral Preparatory School raised $225,000 the night of the Legacy Gala. The event has strong alumni backing for which the headmaster, the Rev. Scott Jabo, is grateful. During the live auction, guests were given the opportunity to purchase auditorium seats at $500 each. The seats alone brought in $50,000 dollars. The auditorium will undergo renovations this summer.
Special thanks to Denis DiLoreto, class of '65, who donated the 1934 Ford Street Rod Coupe awarded in the auction that night. DiLoreto, now of Chambersburg and a University of Pittsburgh School of Law graduate, attended the gala. The prize vehicle went to George Lyons, class of '71, owner of Contemporary Motorcar Ltd., who is both a collector and dealer in antique and classic cars. Lyons said that his uncle, the late Admiral Denys Knoll, was a member of the first Prep graduating class in the mid-1920s, and that his son, Mark Lyons, will be a freshman there this fall. Through the years, there have been many Prep grads in the Lyons and Knoll families.
Lorei family blessing
Congratulations and best wishes to the Rev. Brian Thomas Lorei on his ordination into the priesthood June 27 at Christ the King Cathedral in Atlanta. Paper houses, $1
Inspired by the Extreme Makeover Home Edition Project taking place in Erie, Scott Enterprise Restaurants and Splash Lagoon are selling paper houses for a $1 donation to help support the Maleno Family to Family Fund. The houses will be on sale through Aug. 31.
The Malenos hope to continue the sense of community elicited by the show's presence in Erie, long after the celebrities and cameras roll on to the next location. The fund will help to build new homes and repair existing homes for those in need in the Erie area.
Restaurant and Sports Bar manager Sandi Flanagan has helped by making a large push at Boston's by featuring a contest among servers to see who can raise the most money for the fund. "It's a friendly competition," she said. "It's exciting to be able to take part in helping the community, and it even has vacationers and passers-by involved as that is the main group we see at Boston's." In less than a week, the venue raised more than $125 in sales.
Scott Enterprises has been working on the project in conjunction with Anne Maleno and Natalie Washburn from Maleno Development. Other locations where you can make a donation are Applebee's, Damon's Grill, Quaker Steak & Lube, Steak 'n Shake and Splash Lagoon.
The funds will be distributed through the Erie Community Foundation and St. Martin Center of Erie. Invitation to Sunset Soiree
