lovable dolls
The success of the Encore Musical Theatre continues to grow with the upcoming production of "Little Shop of Horrors."The rock musical composed by Alan Menken and written by Howard Ashman promises to be the theater's most ambitious show yet.
The musical is based on the 1960 film "The Little Shop of Horrors," directed by Roger Corman and written by Charles Griffith. The musical was adapted for the big screen in 1980 starring Rick Moranis as main character Seymour Krelborn.
What sets "Little Shop" apart from previous shows "Guys and Dolls" and "Evita!" is the famous Audrey II puppet that brings to life the malevolent alien singing plant that starts out as a beacon of hope for the misfit cast of skid-row denizens.
"We want the puppet to be amazing," said Director Barb Cullen. "Actually there are four of them."The set of puppets are provided by distributor Monkey Boy Puppet. The set includes the "baby" plant which is small enough to fit into a pot. The second puppet sits on the floor and is nearly man-sized.

Across the street at Progressive Field earlier in the day, CC's old mates prepped for their series against the Yankees by extending their season-best winning streak to four, and their home winning streak over the Rays to 17 -- yes, 17, dating back to 2005.
When Sabathia takes the mound Saturday in Yankees gray, making his first start in Cleveland in a uniform other than the Indians' after signing a seven-year, $161 million deal with New York this offseason, his reception will be the center of attention.

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, FOX NEWS HOST: Well, now the debate begins. President Obama says Judge Sonia Sotomayor is the one, the one he says he wants on the Supreme Court. So what do we know about Judge Sotomayor? And how big a fight will this appointment be on Capitol Hill? Moments ago, Karl Rove went "On the Record."
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
VAN SUSTEREN: Karl, what do you make of this choice, this -- the nominee by President Obama for the Supreme Court?
KARL ROVE, FORMER BUSH WHITE HOUSE ADVISER, FOX CONTRIBUTOR: Well, he's going to get himself a judge at the end of this who is very liberal, has an expansive view of the judiciary and has a compelling personal story. In a way, both sides, Democrats and Republicans, are going to get what they want. He gets a liberal judge, gets to appeal to Latinos and women, which they expressed some concern about the criticism that they've received from Latino groups. Republicans get a chance to talk about the proper role of the judiciary.
bonnie sweeten
Police and the FBI say Bonnie Sweeten, of Feasterville, made a cell phone call from inside the trunk of a car on Tuesday, telling a 911 dispatcher she and her daughter, Julia Rakoczy, had been forced into the car after it struck her SUV from behind.
It is not clear whether the 38-year-old mother knew the two men she said kidnapped her and her daughter around 2 p.m.Authorities say Sweeten's cell phone call was lost in downtown Philadelphia, about 20 miles from the abduction scene.

tomb of the unknown soldier
The President spoke briefly in the Rose Garden before departing to Arlington National Cemetery, where he will lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier and deliver remarks. The President largely reiterated what he said in a paper statement that the White House released at 2:00 am this morning. Mr. Obama said that the communist country's missile program poses a great threat to the world, and that the international community must stand up to North Korea.
"The United States and the international community must take action in response," he said.
The President said the North Koreans have violated international law, and gone back on it's own international commitments
"North Korea is not only deepening it's own isolation," the President said, "it's also inviting stronger international pressure."
memorial day quotes
The roar of Sunday's Indianapolis 500 race, sizzling burgers, pungent charcoal smoke wafting though neighborhoods and giggling children splashing in swimming pools are among the sounds and smells of Memorial Day weekend. The three-day holiday unofficially starts the summer, kick-back-and-relax vacation season.
Today's merriment, however, coincides with a serious, significant holiday that honors Americans who have died in combat.
Before you dunk your cousin in the pool or head over to the mall for some bargains, here are a few facts about the reason you have the day off.
• Holiday with two names: Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day.
Three years after the end of the Civil War, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic — established Decoration Day as a time to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared its observation date as May 30.
diane borchardt
Ruben Borchardt was a widower with two kids who married Diane in 1979. They were living happily till 1993 when Ruben wanted to divorce Diane as he was going around with someone else. Diane then approached three of her students for murdering Ruben and offered the youths $20,000 from a life insurance policy, her wedding and engagement rings and two cars in exchange for the killing.
Although Diane had a good alibi, one of the murderers spoke out of the plot as Diane as the mastermind of the plot. At her trial, Diane Borchardt was found guilty of first degree intentional homicide. She was sentenced to life in prison

Monday at dawn, Davis and about 40 others will place those symbolic tombstones in perfect rows on the lawn near the Peace Arch in Blaine. For the past six years, the one-day Arlington Northwest Memorial has been a symbol of the costs of the war in Iraq, each tombstone representing a fallen U.S. soldier.
Because the soldiers continue to die, Davis keeps making tombstones. In his open-air workshop at the end of a long winding road east of Duvall, curtains of rain fall as he works. Cutting. Stacking.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death, though it appeared to be a suicide, said an official with the Paris police headquarters. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of police agency policy, gave no details.

amygdala cells
Previous research from the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at UCL suggested that the amygdala, an area of the brain known to be involved in processing emotions, becomes active during decisions influenced by the framing effect. Now, in a study published today in the Journal of Neuroscience, UCL researchers have shown that a person's susceptibility to the framing effect – and the response of their amygdala – appears to be at least partially influenced by their genetic make-up.
solarwinds
After trading as high as $15.16, SolarWinds shares eased by mid-morning on the New York Stock Exchange, changing hands for $14.18, or about 13 percent over the initial public offering price.
"Tech stocks have been mixed this year, but firms realize they have to be productive so they are renewing their equipment," said Linda Killian, a principal with Connecticut-based investment firm Renaissance Capital.
"There was scarcity to this deal," Killian added, explaining SolarWinds' strong pricing and debut.
The company's strong profitability was also a major draw for investors, another analyst said.
"For every dollar of added top line revenue, SolarWinds gets a bigger percentage of profit increase than their competitors, who have lower profit margins," said Francis Gaskins, president of research firm IPO Desktop.

Wall, ranked the No. 1 point guard, No. 5 overall, on the ESPNU 100, informed Miami coach Frank Haith Tuesday morning that he had committed to Kentucky. The reasoning, according to a source, was because he just wanted to play for Calipari.
If Calipari had stayed as coach at Memphis, there would have been no drama in Wall's commitment. Privately, Calipari was convinced Wall would have chosen the Tigers, but the coach's departure to Kentucky created a soap opera in the renewed recruiting chase.
Wall teased Duke, and actually gave Miami an informal commitment last week, according to a source close to the situation.

what happened on grey s anatomy last night
When it comes to TV, rumors often turn out to be true. Word was that Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight were preparing to leave "Grey's Anatomy." And at the end of last night's season finale, both Izzy Stevens and George O'Malley appeared to be gone: Izzy crashing, cancer-stricken, in her hospital bed, George coding in an operating room after being hit by a bus. In both cases, no one called a time of death; there's room for resurrection and contract negotiation, not necessarily in that order. But in truth, it wouldn't be so bad for "Grey's" to lose these two, instead of straining to squeeze them into yet another season. Their characters have taken so many twists and turns that, at some points, they've become unrecognizable.
Perhaps that's the trouble with a show that's essentially a soap opera: the need for new romantic story lines can leads to absurdly mismatched pairs, and the Izzy-George affair, a few seasons ago, was a chief offender. This fifth season, Izzy even got carnal with her dead fiancé, Denny (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), as viewers howled in frustration. At least he turned out to be a hallucination: a symptom of her aggressive cancer.
flags at half mast today
Flags at half-staff today to honor fallen officers
Flags are to fly at half-staff today for Peace Officers Memorial Day. Gov. Rendell has ordered Pennsylvania flags at state facilities to be flown at half-staff, and President Obama directed the same for U.S. flags.
"On this day, we pay tribute to the local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who provide a vital public service and, too often, pay the ultimate sacrifice to safeguard the rights and freedoms of our citizens," Rendell said in a statement. "We honor them for their character, leadership, and courage."
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy and Congress designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day. The calendar week in which May 15 falls is National Police Week. - Inquirer staff

chrysler dealerships closing
NEW YORK — Chrysler LLC wants to eliminate roughly a quarter of its 3,200 U.S. dealerships by early next month, saying in a bankruptcy court filing Thursday that the network is antiquated and has too many stores competing with each other.
The company, in a motion filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York, said it wants to eliminate 789 dealerships by June 9. Many of the dealers' sales are too low, the automaker said. Just over 50 percent of dealers account for about 90 percent of the company's U.S. sales, the motion said.
Dealers were told Thursday morning through United Parcel Service letters if they would remain or be eliminated. The move, which the dealers can appeal, is likely to cause devastating effects in cities and towns across the country as thousands of jobs are lost and taxes are not paid.
Chrysler spokeswoman Kathy Graham would not comment other than to say the company will notify dealers before speaking publicly. A hearing is scheduled for June 3 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York to determine whether to approve Chrysler's motion.

the torment of saint anthony
ORT WORTH – In an extraordinary coup, the Kimbell Art Museum has acquired the earliest known painting by Michelangelo, one of only four easel paintings by the Renaissance master in the world.
The Kimbell's purchase, The Torment of Saint Anthony (1487-88), will be the only painting by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) to enter the permanent collection of a U.S. museum. Two of the other paintings are in London's National Gallery, and a third is in Florence's Uffizi Gallery.
The opportunity to buy the work, for an undisclosed sum, came just weeks after the arrival of newly appointed Kimbell director Eric McCauley Lee earlier this year. He was having lunch one day with former Kimbell director Edmund "Ted" Pillsbury, who had heard about the painting, which was being studied in the conservation studios at the Metropolitan Museum of New York
corie blount
Sometimes, professional athletes are very intelligent. Sometimes, they are quite the opposite. Take ex-NBA journeyman for example, Corie Blount. Having played on seven teams in eleven years in the NBA, Blount was considered one of those hustle guys that would just go out there and get rebounds for you. In his career, he never averaged 20 minutes on the floor. Back in December, Blount was arrested when 11 pounds of marijuana was intercepted en route to Blount.
Blount cited that the eleven pounds was for personal use for him and his friends. (Perfect). "Cheech and Chong would have had a hard time smoking that much," Judge Craig Hedric told Blount.
Blount will spend one year in prison, was fined Blount $10,000 and ordered him to surrender two vehicles and $34,000 in cash seized in the bust.
icd9 codes
The culprit, as it turned out, was the billing codes and associated descriptions in those records.
"These descriptions, from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9), often do not accurately describe a patient because the right ICD-9 code may not exist," Roni Zeiger, product manager for Google Health, wrote in a blog posting. "So the doctor or hospital administrator chooses something that is 'close enough' for billing purposes. In other cases, the assigned code is precisely what the doctor is trying to rule out, and if the patient turns out not to have that often scary diagnosis, it is still associated with their record."
When Google Health replicated those billing codes, though, it also assigned deBronkart some phantom conditions. "We're also glad this happened," Zeiger wrote, "because we and many others now better understand the limitations of certain types of health data and we are working with partners to improve the quality of the data before it gets to Google Health and our users." Nonetheless, he added, "We are more committed than ever to putting consumers in charge of their own health information."

Looks like Kate Gosselin may be trying to turn the tables on her husband, Jon. Rumors are flying now that she has been having an affair with Steve Neild, a bodyguard who often travels with her and her family. This comes roughly two weeks after reports, with photos, have surfaced that Jon has been carrying on with 23-year-old Deanna Hummel.
In an interview with People, Kate says, "Already the allegations they're making about me are disgusting, unthinkable, unfathomable, and I am horrified." She is also worried about how this will impact Neild and his family, who Kate says, "These are people who absolutely love us and want to see us through to the end." She goes on to say that in situations like the one she and her family are in (you know, being stars of TLC's show 'Jon & Kate Plus 8') that their close circle of friends is now their publicist, manager, and security team.

Victoria Gotti, daughter of the late Gambino crime boss and former star of the reality-television show Growing Up Gotti, is well behind on her McMansion's McMortgage, it turns out, and is about to be foreclosed upon.
We know it feels like a booby prize now, but in reality this is probably a good thing for Gotti, who is, with her taut, fake-tanned skin, surgically enhanced features, and freakishly flaxen hair, the perfect spokeswoman for the overindulgence and overextension of the Boom.Gotti blamed the financial mess on her ex-husband Carmine Agnello, who she says took a $856,000 loan against the home without her knowledge. She became the sole owner of the home in 2004 and the mortgage went into default while she and Agnello "were involved in a bitter matrimonial action," court papers say. Agnello pleaded guilty to racketeering in 2004.
"I won a house that was a booby prize riddled with debt," Gotti told the Daily News.

WATCH REAL TOPLESS PICTURES OF CARRIE PREJEAN HERE
More ‘real ‘ topless photos of (perhaps soon to be ex Miss California) Carrie Prejean have emerged, this time via TMZ. TMZ held off on posting a first batch of photos of Carrie in various stages of undress because her lawyers claimed they were taken when she was underage (17) and didn’t know what she was doing.
Those claims seem to have been proven false and those photos were likely taken post breast augmentation, when she was 20. Fool me once! Not surprising when TMZ got their hands on this fresh batch of photos they were more then eager to share here. Poor little Carrie is just trying to follow the path of the bible and do right by Jesus darn it, and all these naked pictures of her keep popping up. Obviously liberals and gays must be conspiring to taint her reputation for speaking her mind. Right?

jesse money
20-year-old Jesse Money is the daughter of rocker Eddie Money.
As a toddler, Jesse would walk onstage at her father’s concerts to bring him water while he was performing. As she got older she began touring regularly with him as a backup singer.
Jesse competed on the MTV reality competition “Rock the Cradle”, which featured the offspring of music legends like Olivia Newton-John and Kenny Loggins. She was eliminated in the first round, but continues to focus on her music career.
In January, Eddie Money said in an interview that he believes Jessica will get a record deal this year. He also tattled on her, telling BlogTalkRadio host Marq Piocos, “She got a DUI on New Year’s Eve, so now she can’t drive for a year . . . Gotta live and learn, baby!” and said Jessica and her boyfriend “drink like fishes.”

Fans of texting, E Ink, and budget mobile
I really like the design of the Alias series, and I'm looking forward to the day when Samsung finally puts it into a good smartphone. The dual-flip to switch between typing and calling modes is a really convenient design, and the E Ink keyboard just makes the whole package even niftier. Maybe I'll get my wish when they come out with the i15000.

On May 8, Danny Derbyshire (age 13.846) operated a chain saw for the first time. He got half an hour of instructions and warnings beforehand. Then we went up the treehouse and sawed off a big old dead branch, with some rope-work so it wouldn't fall 20 feet on to a neighbor's new fence. Great father-son co-operation. Great excitement for Danny. Great pride & satisfaction for Dad.
[Chain saw story. In 1974, when chain saws were not much seen — were definitely not a normal houshold consumer item — I was living in New Rochelle and hanging out nights at a rather seedy bar named Buzzy and Dick's, down there on the Post Road somewhere. One night the bartender/owner got into a dispute about something with a very well-oiled customer. The guy left, then came back a half hour later with a (presumably) very well-oiled chain saw, and proceeded to attack the bar with it, to the consternation of us patrons. Anybody around in New Rochelle back then remember this? It was the talk of the district for at least a week . . . among barflies, anyway.]

First it was Miss California, now they are attacking Miss Rhode Island. What's the fuss is all about? This is all hypocrisy! Nothing is wrong with the images! Those images are images of beauty, nothing is ugly with those pics. I guess these people who are complaining about these topless photos are envious because they do not have boobs. And I do not need to add more because many people are saying it too: but this mess just makes gay people and their supporters look vindictive and vile.
halle berry baby pictures
Halle Berry suddenly got angry with paparazzi when she wad trying to get out of the Barefoot restaurant on 3rd Street after having a lunch. The reason she was with her baby “Nahla” and was just trying to evade paparazzi from getting any pictures of her daughter.
Halle was just trying to protect her daughter from getting pictured by paparazzi and warned the photographers out there many times but i guess the ever hungry paparazzi always has the last laugh
I definitely understand why she was getting angry. It’s obvious if you are a mother to wonderful child then at any cost you wanna protect her. But then this is the price that you have to pay if you are a big star in America.

children of the corn
Home schoolers beat back what amounted to a Democratic filibuster today in the House and rammed through legislation to force the evil secular humanists to accept their diplomas. We didn't keep track of how long this debate dragged on, but the chair of the Capitol Hill Press Corps has just now officially ruled it was "a long-ass time."
Home schoolers are upset because certain state and local government agencies won't accept their diplomas when they try to apply for jobs. Their bill, which passed the House on a 61-27 vote, requires these agencies to give the diplomas the same weight as ones from public schools.
fargo marathon
FARGO, N.D. (AP) Thousands of runners are taking to the streets of Fargo, for what might be a record Fargo Marathon.
The men's field for the 26.2-mile race Saturday includes at least three Kenyans one who posted a 2-hour, 12-minute time in 1999. The Fargo Marathon men's record is 2:30:34. The women's field includes a Canadian who posted a 2-hour, 40-minute time last year. The Fargo Marathon women's record is 2 hours, 50 minutes. Marathon executive director Mark Knutson says this year's field is the largest and best, in terms of elite runners.
This year's route was changed because of Red River flooding. The course for the last four years has meandered near the Red River in Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn. This year the route will be reduced to a 13.1-mile two-loop course.

landshark stadium
MIAMI (AP) — The name of the Miami Dolphins' home will be LandShark Stadium, but not for long.
It will be for this season only and expires before the stadium hosts the Super Bowl in February.
The change is part of the Dolphins' new partnership with singer Jimmy Buffett. He performed a private concert at the stadium Friday, including new Dolphins lyrics he wrote to the melody of his popular tune "Fins."
Buffett and new team owner Stephen Ross unveiled a logo for LandShark Stadium. Buffett's Margaritaville enterprise includes LandShark Lager, brewed by Anheuser-Busch.
Ross said the partnership with Buffett will extend beyond this season.

eleanor squillari
**Eleanor Squillari would tell people who walked by his office and saw him staring into space that he "seems to be in a coma.” At one point, Madoff began taking his blood-pressure every 15 minutes and refused to look at his mail. **The staff on the 17th floor, where the Ponzi scheme was conducted, “were mostly low-level, clerical women, many of them working mothers, who probably made no more than $40,000 a year. They were young and naïve, with no background in finance, so they weren’t able to connect the dots.”
**Following Madoff's arrest, his wife, Ruth Madoff, called Squillari multiple times and encouraged her to provide certain information without notifying the bankruptcy trustees, which Squillari said she couldn’t do. **Squillari believes Madoff meticulously planned out the particulars of his arrest and even wanted to FBI to find his appointment book that he left on his desk.
oprah winfrey kfc coupons
History is replete with examples of companies that offered giveaway or discount promotions only to have them become a bit too successful. The idea is to get publicity and drive traffic without hurting your bottom line too badly. But KFC's loss leader might just turn into a big loss.
The Oprah connection is generating huge publicity. "Kentucky fried chicken coupons" is No. 11 on Google trends this morning. It's also interesting that, amid KFC's campaign to "Unthink What You Thought About KFC," the company is promoting the meal that the Colonel has been serving for 50 years. You can dowload a coupon for a free two-piece chicken meal, sides and a biscuit until midnight eastern time today.
No matter the ultimate cost or volume, the true test will be whether the promotion sustainably pulls KFC out of the lagging ranks of fast food chains.

coldplay plagiarism
By Chris Martin’s own admission, his band Coldplay really isn’t very imaginative. A few years ago, he admitted to Rolling Stone, “We’re definitely good, but I don’t think you can say we’re that original. I regard us as being incredibly good plagiarists.”
That quote may end up costing them quite a bit of money in lawsuits. While I’m at it, let’s review just how many times Coldplay has been accused of stealing other people’s work.
Guitarist Satriani accused the band of stealing chords from his 2004 work “If I Could Fly.”

peter sarsgaard
Over the weekend, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard married in a small chapel in Brindisi, Italy, People.com reports.
"We are happy to confirm that Maggie and Peter were married on Saturday, May 2," her rep said in a statement. Among the guests were the actress' younger brother, Jake Gyllenhaal, and his girlfriend, Reese Witherspoon. The site reports that in March Maggie had a bridal shower, also attended by Witherspoon.
The couple announced their engagement and pregnancy in 2006 after dating for more than four years. They have a 2-year-old daughter, Ramona, and live in Brooklyn, New York. They co-starred in 2003's "In God's Hands,"janet jackson wardrobe malfunction
The Supreme Court wants a lower court to re-examine its decision throwing out a $550,000 fine against CBS over Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" incident, the Associated Press reports.
The lower court had ruled in CBS' favor, saying the Federal Communications Commission had strayed from its long-held approach of applying identical standards to words and images when reviewing complaints of indecency. The FCC had fined the network over Jacksons' breast-baring performance at the 2004 Super Bowl.
The order to revisit the case follows the Supreme Court's ruling last week that narrowly upheld FCC's policy of threatening fines against even one-time uses of curse words on live television, the AP writes.
celiac disease
No bread. No pasta. No cereal.
No candy. No beer. No gravy.
For a patient with celiac disease, the list of foods to avoid can seem overwhelming.
“Celiac disease is an auto-immune disease that is commonly misconstrued for a food allergy, a wheat allergy,” Kelley Dow, a registered dietitian with Self Regional Healthcare, said.
The Celiac Disease Awareness Campaign, part of the National Institutes of Health, estimates up to 1 percent of all Americans suffer from celiac disease, although many have never been diagnosed.
Dow said one problem with the disease is its diagnosis: symptoms vary from patient to patient. Standard symptoms include stomach cramping, unexplained weight loss or weight gain, diarrhea, bone or joint paint, infertility and fatigue, but the patient may have none of those.

chicken of the sea
The U.S. Supreme Court has signaled it's clear sailing ahead for a suit by a New Jersey woman who claims to have suffered mercury poisoning from Chicken of the Sea canned tuna.
Monday's denial of certiorari sets the stage for a federal court trial in Newark, N.J., in a putative class action suit, filed under New Jersey's Product Liability Act, that faults a cannery company with not putting mercury warnings on the label.
The justices without opinion let stand a 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling last September that the claim is not pre-empted by the Food and Drug Administration's "pervasive regulatory scheme."nyc bike tour

First of all, Caleb Madison is brilliant. Sunday puzzles, pure genius, and he’s about four years old. Amazing. I just want to say that part now. Because I’m about to talk about a handful of crossings in today’s puzzle that made me kinda cranky, but I want to make it clear that I think Caleb is a genius. And personable. We need to get him on the podcast one of these days. I so enjoyed meeting him at the ACPT. Right now, if I had to put money down on who I think could possibly be Will Shortz’s eventual replacement at the New York Times, I might put that money on Caleb Madison. But only if he gets a haircut and grows a mustache. Caleb, get to work on that.
Okay, let’s get the theme and cleverness covered. The puzzle is called “A Stately Garden,” and in the long entries, some letters are circled. The clues each end with a state name in brackets (I guess to make it clear that the states are not part of the clues?), and ultimately, what I think happens is that the circled letters spell out the state flowers.cub foods

danny gans
Danny Gans died early this morning, after a family member called 911 to say Danny was having trouble breathing. By the time paramedics arrived, he was dead.
A ticket rep at Steve Wynn's Encore hotel tells us they just got the call and the entire staff is "shocked and upset."
Gans is a legend in Las Vegas -- the self described "musical impressionist" signed a $150 million contract in 2000.
We're told Gans died at 3:00 AM at his home in Vegas. There are reports his wife discovered his body and called for help.
